Good Morning readers, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Mine was full of King Cake, Parades, Gumbo, Bloody Mary’s, mimosas, Crawfish Étouffée and more King Cake. We tend to eat a lot during Mardi Gras or at least I do! Haha! Thank goodness that I’m attempting a juice cleanse with Raw Republic the day after Mardi Gras (Fat) Tuesday!

Anyway, I’m so proud of myself for putting together the most adorable Valentine’s Day breakfast bar cart with a little from my best-friend/life-assistant, Haley of course! Somebody has to keep me in line otherwise I’ll procrastinate and try to throw everything together last minute.

Easy Pink Sprinkled Donuts & Cookies: Have you ever picked out a delicious looking box of pre-packaged colorful sprinkled donuts at the grocery store and they turned out to be awful? I know I have so instead of trusting the grocery store again, I went to the best donut house in town, Butter Krisp and purchased a dozen glazed donuts fresh out of the oven! I let them cool when I returned home and then I smoothed some whipped frosting just over the top of the donuts to make the sprinkles stick.  I chose pink sparkly sprinkles to go with my Valentine’s Day Breakfast theme.

As for my homemade Valentine’s Day Cookies, you don’t want my baking advice! Trust me! My hearts and lips came out looking like footballs and soccer balls the first time I baked them. I had to take the cookie cutters to the already baked cookies again to cut them into the correct shape. Yes, that did do the trick, but I know there is more efficient way to get the job done. I recommend following this recipe via Southern Living–> Heart Cookies- How to

For the rest of my bar cart, I included all of our (me & Blake) favorites like coffee, mimosas, hershey kisses, pink roses and colorful heart candies. I found the little heart bowl at Home Goods and the plastic candy vessel at Target.

Make sure to check back later this week to see the details on how I changed the bar cart from morning to night to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Also, you might want to check out my Gal-entine’s Day post in case you plan on spending Valentine’s Day with your gals!–> Gal-entine’s Day Sleepover

Special thank you to Brooke for putting together this adorable behind the scenes video of my Valentine’s Morning & Night post! Check it out on my Youtube channel here–> DIY: How to Decorate for Valentine’s Day!

What is the best New Orleans Mardi Gras cocktail you ask? To me, it’s none other than a Zing Zang Bloody Mary! As promised, today Krystal and I are sharing our favorite recipes for the best New Orleans style Bloody Mary’s!  In my book, the most important ingredients other than vodka are the Zing Zang mix and the spicy beans. Just give me some King Cake, Zing Zang and spicy beans and I’m good for the whole day! What is your favorite Bloody Mary ingredient? We’d also love to hear your recipes too! Check out my recipe below:

Grey Goose & Zing Zang Bloody Mary

  1. 2.5 oz. Zing Zang
  2. 2 pinches salt
  3. 2 pinches pepper
  4. 0.6 fl. oz. of Grey Goose Vodka
  5. 1 squeeze of lime
  6. Shake with ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain into your White Elephant Designs Mardi Gras Cup! Garnish with spicy beans, olives and a celery stalk. You can always squeeze a little more lime at the end too! At least I always do!
  7. Drink up!

Huge thank you to our friends Dave and Emmy for opening up their home to us for our Mardi Gras staycation!

Designing my very own handbag with Gigi New York has been like a dream come true for me and I cannot thank their team enough for making the Jenn Bucket Bag possible. For more on the design process, check out my interview from when we first launched the Jenn Bag this past fall here–> The Debut of The Jenn Bucket Bag & Jenn Bucket Bag Travels to NYC

Read my interview below for deets on the new colors for Spring 2015!

Describe your favorite feature of the Jenn Bucket Bag.

My favorite feature of the Jenn Bucket Bag is that it has both a short shoulder strap and a removable crossbody strap for convenience. I also love the texture of the embossed python body with the smooth pebble trim for added details.

We love the color Desert Rose for Spring! What made you pick this color from our new collection?

I am obsessed with all things pink right now especially blush! Honestly, I’ve been waiting for this bag in the Desert Rose color since we designed the Jenn Bucket Bag this past fall.

Describe 2 places you think you’ll take the Jenn Bucket Bag in Desert Rose

I have already taken my Jenn Bucket Bag in Desert Rose on a mini staycation at the Le Meridien Hotel in New Orleans and the Southern Hotel in Downtown Covington. I’ve also taken it out to my favorite café, Abita Roasting Co. for coffee and King Cake before running errands. However, I hope to take the Jenn bag on quite a few exciting adventures throughout 2015! So stay tuned for #JennBucketBagTravels!

How do you make this color transition from late winter to early spring?

The Desert Rose color is definitely considered a neutral with its gorgeous blush tone, which makes it super easy to transition into new seasons. The new Harbor Blue color is equally beautiful and can easily fit into the neutral family as well. Lately, I’ve been pairing mine with my distressed denim, ankle boots and my sleeveless trench or ivory moto jacket for a refreshing transitional look that still keeps me warm. Once spring officially arrives, you’ll see me toting around my Jenn bag while wearing espadrilles, cutoffs and beach cover-ups!

We know you have carried the Jenn Bucket Bag (in other colors) for some time now. Do you like the new colors we chose for Spring?

I of course still love my Stone and Navy bucket bags for Spring, but I’m so excited to incorporate these new pastel colors into my wardrobe! Like I mentioned earlier, I’ve been waiting for these soft spring pastels since fall.

Learning how to poach an egg, make homemade pralines and cook New Orleans Style Grits and Grillades at the New Orleans School of Cooking definitely sits at the top of my favorites list from our FQ Stylecation. Y’all, I can’t believe that I actually made this dish with my own two hands! Okay okay, my two hands along with the help of Krsytal and Chef Austin Faucheaux! However, it wasn’t until I tasted our meal that I had to really pat myself on the back! It was hands down, the most delicious grits and grillades I have ever eaten and I’m not just saying that I because I made it! I was so proud I that snapped a photo with my iPhone (pictured below) and messaged it to everyone I know!  If you’re looking for a fun new learning experience with your family, friends or even just yourself, I highly recommend that you book a class at the New Orleans School of Cooking. You even get to enjoy a little wine and some New Orleans history while you cook!

grits and grillades

Guess What? I have a surprise for you! I’m going to give you the recipe for this appetizing dish so you can it yourself at home! I definitely suggest taking a class first though! Good Luck and I want see how your dish comes out so make sure to tag me in your photos! @HauteOffTheRack and use #HauteOffTheStove!

Stone Ground Cheese Grits:

Ingredients: (makes 4-6 Servings**)

  • 5 C. water
  • 1 C. stone ground white corn grits
  • 1/4 C. grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 Tsbp. Romano Cheese

Procedure: In a tall sauce pot, combine water and salt. Bring to a boil. Slowly whisk in grits and reduce heat to low and cover. Cook for 15-20 minutes stirring occasionally to ensure grits from sticking. Remove grits from heat. Add butter and both types of cheese and mix well. Serve warm.

Grillades: (makes 4-6 servings**)

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 lbs. round steak
  • 1 Tbsp. Joes’ Stuff seasoning blend
  • 1/2 C. flour + 2 Tbsp.
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1/2 C. chopped white onion
  • 1/4 C. chopped celery
  • 1/4 C. chopped green bell pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. sliced garlic
  • 2 C. beef stock
  • 1/2 tsp. dried thyme
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • 1 C. chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tsp. red wine vinaigrette
  • 2 Tbsp. sliced green onion
  • Hot sauce to taste (optional)
  • Additional Joe’s Stuff to taste

Procedure: Pound out round steak with meat mallet to about 1/4 inch thick then julienne the beef into 1/2 inch thick strips. Combine flour with Joe’s Stuff and dust the pieces of meat in the flour shaking off any excess flour.

In a tall skillet, heat the oil and brown the pieces of meat on each side. Lower hear and immediately add onion, bell pepper and celery and cook until translucent. Stirring constantly, add the renaming 2 Tbsp. of flour and cook on medium heat until flour starts to brown. Add garlic, bay leaf, thyme, worcestershire sauce, tomatoes and beef stock. Bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook 30-45 minutes or until beef is tender.

Once ready to serve, add hot sauce, red wine vinaigrette and Joe’s Stuff seasoning to desire taste.

Serve over warm grits and garnish with poached egg and green onions.

Poached Eggs:

Ingredients:

  • 2 qts. water
  • 1 Tbsp. white vinegar
  • 4 large eggs

Procedure: In a tall sauce pot, bring water and vinegar to a medium simmer. Crack egg gently into a large spoon or ladle and carefully lower into a simmering liquid.

You may poach 2 eggs at a time without over crowding the pot.

Tips: Use very fresh eggs. Use eggs at room temperature.

After brunch, we couldn’t leave without dessert so we made homemade pralines! The process might look easy, but the art of making pralines is no easy task. The mix has to be just the right temperature and you must place the warm candies quickly and carefully onto the wax paper before they harden. Be sure to watch our behind the scenes video!
