Top 5 Tips for Styling Bookshelves
Hey everyone, I hope you’re all staying warm out there. These winter storms down here in the south are crazy. Fortunately, we’ve been lucky over here and we’re just enjoying this time indoors. I’ve also been taking this time at home to declutter and better organize little areas of the house. I even finally finished decorating the gold bookshelf in Beck’s nursery with pieces that were passed down to us from family along with beautiful decorative objects from At Home stores. Sometimes decorating bookshelves can feel intimidating and overwhelming so I always like to start by choosing pieces that I truly love and then working around those pieces. I also suggest mixing and matching bigger and smaller pieces that complement each other to create a layered and balanced look. Start with large staple items, and then trickle in your smaller, more intricate objects. This will make your shelves look full and complete. Scroll through this post to see how I decorated the bookshelf in Beck’s nursery.

Full disclosure: Beck doesn’t play in his room often especially unsupervised, but I realize that eventually I’ll have to move up the more breakable items. Also, this glass and shelf can be mounted to the wall.

Top 5 Tips for Styling Bookshelves
1) When it comes to styling tabletops and shelves, I always like to include at least one unique piece along with decorative objects that truly reflect our personalities like treasures brought back from recent travels and or pieces that remind us of a special time in our lives.

Fun fact about the “Love You Forever” book: Blake’s late father gave this book to his mother (Blake’s grandmother) as a Mother’s Day present over 20 years ago. He wrote a letter to her on the inside of the book and pasted photos himself with his mom and with Blake all throughout the book. Blake’s grandmother passed the book down to us last Christmas just before Beck was born. Since the book is so special we deiced to put it on display in Beck’s room.
2) Mix and match bigger and smaller pieces to create a layered and balanced look. Start with large staple items, and then trickle in your smaller, more intricate objects. This will make your shelves look full and complete.

We found these gold and glass boxes at At Home and put Beck’s silver comb and hair brush from Blake’s grandmother in them.

3) Book stacks and decorative boxes are my go-to items for adding height and creating visual interest to a shelf or tabletop. I love these custom book stacks with our names and birthdates stamped on them. It adds a more personal touch to the room. Find them here–> custom book stacks
4) Include a piece of artwork to add more personality to the shelf. I also suggest adding a pop of color with greenery from a plant like a small succulent. Plants and colorful artwork help bring the room to life. I found the gold plant holder at At Home.

5) I love using vintage inspired luggage as decorative pieces because not only do they look beautiful on display, but you can also store special things inside of them. I plan to put some of Beck’s mementos in these two pieces of luggage.

We found this cute pom pom basket at At Home Stores to put all of Beck’s stuffed animals in.

How to Throw a Fabulous Galentine’s Day Party at Home
Morning friends, firstly, thank you all so much for the love and support you showed on my latest design with Gibsonlook that we launched yesterday. See here if you missed it–> The Loungewear Jumpsuit Your 2021 Wardrobe Needs
Secondly, I’m excited to share all of the fabulous Galentine’s Day party tips with you to help you throw an amazing at-home Galentine’s Day. In previous years I’ve always planned a Galentine’s Day lunch at a fun restaurant with my friends, but this year I thought it would be fun to do a comfy and cozy at-home party with my mom and sisters to celebrate the launch of my loungewear jumpsuit and cozy duster cardigan.

I designed the most amazing loungewear jumpsuit with Gibsonlook and it’s officially available for purchase on their site and we’re offering 20% OFF your entire purchase with code: HAUTE20. We also restocked the “best selling” cozy duster cardigan in the toasted almond color. It sold out so fast when we launched it last October so we decided to bring it back along with a matching jumpsuit to wear as a set. You can see how I styled the duster 12 different ways in this post–> 12 Ways to Style a Cozy Duster Cardigan

I recently invited my mom and sisters over to celebrate the launch of my jumpsuit and the restock of the cozy duster cardigan. Gibsonlook was so kind to gift each of them a jumpsuit and cardigan to wear at my Galentine’s Day theme launch party. My youngest sister is 22 and my mom is 57, which just goes to show that it works for women of all all ages! Scroll through this post for tips on how to throw the best Galentine’s Day party at home.

How to Throw a Fabulous Galentine’s Day Party at Home:
1) Sweets and treats are a must! Put together a mouthwatering candy board for an at-home date night or Galentine’s Day party with your friends! Just grab all of your favorite treats & arrange them on a cheeseboard or tray! Pro tip: look for treats with different colors, textures & sizes to create an eye-catching board. You can always unwrap candies & break them in half for more visual interest!

I also ordered these beautiful heart-shaped cakes from Jenny’s Cake Creations, but totally not necessary. The candy board should be plenty or you can also just do heart shaped cookies or Valentine’s Day cupcakes.

2) When it comes to food, you can always do potluck and have each guest bring a dish, but I highly recommend having everyone pitch in to order heart shaped pizzas because they’re so cute and obviously delicious!

3) Gift your gals! You can give can give them anything from matching outfits or friendship bracelets to heart shaped candy or mini bottles of champagne. You could even ask all of your guests to arrive without makeup and give them all sheet face masks or eye masks when they arrive and have a little mini spa party. My favorites masks are the 111Skin ones, but I also found these budget friendly ones that come with 16 or 24 to a pack–> Dermal Korea Collagen Essence Full Face Facial Mask Sheet

4) Get all sappy and sentimental and have each guest share one thing they love about themselves, their friends (aka you all) and their significant other if they have one.

5) Play a game like For The Girls – The Ultimate Girls Night Party Game – by What Do You Meme? Don’t have a card game? Make up your own like — go around the room and have each person tell the story of their first kiss without saying the word “kiss” or they have to drink.

6) Get all cute and nostalgic for Galentine’s Day and ask each guest to bring old school Valentine’s Day cards with candy to exchange with each other at the party like we used to do in elementary school.

7) Last, but not least, you need Galentine’s Day decor to make your home look festive and feel warm and welcoming! Fresh roses and balloons are always a go-to for me! Plus they’re easy to whip up last minute. I always buy 3-4 different colors of roses and arrange them in glass vases myself with a splash of greenery or baby’s breath. For balloons, you can an order or rent a helium tank and blow up heart balloons or letter balloons. I also love the idea of letter balloons that spell out “gals” for you and your friends to hold in cute photos.

For sizing, my mom is wearing the XXS in both the cardigan and the duster and she is 4’11 and normally wears petite XS in clothing. I’m wearing the XXS in the jumpsuit and an XS in the duster and I’m 5 ft and normally wear smalls in clothing.

5 Fun Ways to Still Celebrate Mardi Gras in 2021
Happy Friday friends! Mardi Gras might be cancelled this year, but there are still so many fun ways to celebrate at home like hosting a mini baby parade in the yard or throwing a king cake tasting party with a few friends. Scroll through today’s blog post for 5 Fun Ways to Still Celebrate Mardi Gras in 2021.

5 Fun Ways to Still Celebrate Mardi Gras in 2021
- Host a mini Mardi Gras parade! If you have kids, decorate a wagon and transform it into a mini Mardi Gras float. Get together with a small group friends and host a little baby/kid parade in the front yard with recycled beads from previous years.

Beck’s Mardi Gras float theme: New Orleans Audubon Zoo | I found all of these arts & crafts items at Hobby Lobby to put together his float. This is the exact we used–> Radio Flyer 3-In-1 EZ Folding, Outdoor Collapsible Wagon for Kids & Cargo & Beck’s Costume–> Baby Tiger Costume

2. Celebrate Yardi Gras! Pick a fun a theme and decorate your front porch like a Mardi Gras Float or just add some purple, green and gold decorations like I did. Don’t have time to decorate your own house? Check out this map of all the intricately decorated homes in New Orleans to drive around and check out yourself–> Mardi Gras House Float Map

3. Cook your favorite Louisiana recipes! Make a big pot of jambalaya, red beans or gumbo or you can even boil crawfish if you’re up for it! Don’t feel like cooking, but still want that Louisiana flavor? Pick up some Popeyes fried chicken and a King Cake and call it a day! LOL

4. Throw a King Cake Tasting Party! Create a king cake sign up list and invite a few friends to bring over their favorite king cake and have everyone vote on the “best overall” and the “most unique.” You can even list out a word bank and have everyone try to guess where each king cake is from. I did this with my friends and we had so much fun! I discreetly transferred all of the king cakes onto separate platters as each guest arrived and labeled all of the cakes with a number. Then I cut small slices of every cake for the exact amount of guests and placed toothpicks with numbered flags in them so each guest could vote on their favorite. Some of my favorite king cakes include: Cream Cheese King Cake from Manny Randazzo’s in New Orleans, Pecan Praline King Cake from Haydel’s in New Orleans, Plain King Cake from Dong Phuong in New Orleans, Pecan Cream Cheese King Cake from Keller’s Bakery in Lafayette, Plain King Cake from Meche’s Donut Shop in Lafayette. There are so many other amazing King Cakes out there, but those are just some of my personal faves.

5. Make your own version of King Cake! This recipe from Southern Living is amazing–> King Cake Monkey Bread | I made a similar recipe last year that I shared on my IG stories and this year I made one that tops last year’s king cake bubble up. See the photos below!
Ingredients:
3 cans Pillsbury cinnamon rolls grands
1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
2/3 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup evaporated milk
Garnish: purple, yellow, green sanding sugar
Directions:
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a tube pan with cooking spray.
Step 2
Separate cinnamon rolls, saving icing to use later. Cut each cinnamon roll into four pieces. Place cinnamon roll pieces in tube pan.
Step 3
Beat together cream cheese and sugar. Add eggs, vanilla, and milk. Mix until combined. Pour cream cheese mixture over cinnamon rolls.
Step 4
Bake for 45 to 50 minutes. After baking, let pan cool 10 minutes.
Step 5
Turn baked monkey bread out on plate and ice with cinnamon roll icing. Decorate with purple, yellow, and green sanding sugar.

This homemade king cake was so easy to make and tastes just as delicious as it looks!

Bonus: You can’t have Mardi Gras Day without Bloody Mary cocktails and Popeyes fried chicken! I ordered all of my Popeyes faves and set them out on a nice platter for a mouthwatering display of food.
#HauteOffTheRails Bloody Mary Recipe:
Ingredients:
Ice cubes
Worcestershire sauce
lemon for freshly squeezed lemon juice
lime
hot sauce (Crystal or Louisiana hot sauce works great!)
salt & pepper
Zing Zang Bloody Mary mix
vodka (you can use Absolute pepper vodka for more spice!)
Garnishes:
Celery sticks
Olives
Pickled okra
Lime slice
Lemon slice
Popeyes french fries
Popeyes chicken tenders
Shrimp Cocktail
Directions:
First, scoop ice into a tall glass. Next, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce & hot sauce followed by a heavy pour of Zing Zang (be sure to shake well before using!) Then squeeze in lemon & lime juice! Add a pinch of salt and pepper and pour in a shot (or double shot) of vodka and stir well! Garnish with your favorite toppings using toothpicks and skewers! Get wild with it! After all, it’s Mardi Gras! Refer to the garnish list above for what we used in our Bloody Mary cocktails.
