What I’m Packing for Labor & Delivery

Happy Friday everyone, I’m officially 38.5 weeks now and feel like I can go into labor any day now so I thought I’d share everything I’m packing for labor and delivery. These are my tried are true products that I packed for the hospital last time or at least wish I would have packed the first time.

labor and delivery packing list

This blue and white smocked dress is so cute with a bump, but will also be so pretty for post baby too.

What I’m Packing for Labor & Delivery:

Ritual Prenatal vitamins | Their prenatal includes 12 essential nutrients with high quality ingredients your body can actually absorb. I love the no-nausea capsule design so I can take my in the morning or night. Other prenatal vitamins made me nauseous or just made my stomach hurt. @ritual prenatal vitamins are vegan certified and have no shady additives, fillers or colorants. They feel gentle and easy on my stomach while helping support every stage of pregnancy. They offer free-shipping are delivered straight to your door with their easy monthly subscription service. Take 10% OFF your first 3 months with code: HAUTE

Calm gummies | The Calm gummies are a must! They’re a magnesium supplement and work even better than Colace in my opinion. Not only do they soften the stool, but they also regulate you. Also, drink plenty of water, apple juice and pineapple juice to help you in that department too.

Blanket, personal pillow & pillow case | I highly recommend bringing your own blanket and pillow from home for extra comfort. Just be sure to use a different colored pillow case on yours so you know which one is yours and can spot it before you leave.

YL Essential Oils & Diffuser | Lavender & Calm to help relax and Peppermint in case I get nauseous. I also packed Thieves Hand Sanitizer because I like how it doesn’t dry out your hands.

Silverette Nursing Cups  | Wear these in between nursing to soothe & protect your nipples. It uses the properties of silver to promote healing.

Honest Nipple Balm & Contact Nipple Shields  | Both of these products were lifesavers last time. Use the Nipple Balm in between breastfeeding and you can use the Contact Nipple Shields to help the baby latch if needed if you’re in a lot of pain while nursing. Just make sure to get the correct size for your nipples or they aren’t as effective.

Fuzzy Grip Socks (or) Cozy Slippers | Stay cozy in your socks slippers, but make sure they have a nice grip to avoid slipping falling since your balance may be a little off.

Stretchy disposable underwear & comfy nursing bras | The hospital offers some great disposable underwear, but in case they’re out, I really like this pack of Stretchy disposable underwear. Plus you can use them at home after or these adult diapers.

Dermoplast | They will likely have Dermoplast for me at the hospital, but since it’s the key to relief when it comes to using the bathroom, I packed my own just in case. I highly suggest that you have a second bottle of this at home to use because it is vital especially if you tear like I did and have stitches.

Frida Peri Bottle | They will provide you with a peri bottle, but I like the angle of the Frida one more.

Hanging Toiletry Bag | You may want to pack your shower essentials, hair tools & makeup to look decent to snap a few photos the following day after birth. I like this specific toiletry bag because I can just leave it hanging in the bathroom at my convenience.

Frida Postpartum Kit or Frida C-sections recovery Kit | These kits have almost everything you need for a comfortable healing process.

bobby pins & scrunchies to keep my hair out of my face

black maternity dress

My own towel & dry shampoo in case I don’t feel like washing my hair there. Speaking of showering, I also packed a pair of flip flops to wear in the shower because I’m really weird about sanitation and showering in public places.

Large Refillable Water Bottle | The hospital will offer you a water cup, but I like to have my own too that has a handle and straw.

Comfy robe & 2 pairs of nursing-friendly pajamas | I also like this short sleeve nursing pajama dress for when it’s hot. I also packed one printed robe to potentially wear for day after photos if I’m feeling up to it.

Cute Outfit to wear home & comfy sandals | I packed this light blue dress with functional buttons because it’s nice and loose and nursing friendly. Some people prefer compression outfits and that is definitely understandable after a c-section, but I preferred loser outfits. Also, your feet might be a tad swollen so I would pack some comfy sandals to wear home.

XL phone charger & USB extension cord | I suggest bringing an extra long phone charger that will reach to your bed so you don’t have to get up and down if you phone dies.

JBL Speaker| If you want to set a calm and relaxing mood with the some music, don’t forget a speaker. This JBL speaker is nice and compact so easy to pack and the clip feature makes it convenient too.

Tripod | If you have a tripod, bring it along for self timer photos & videos especially if you don’t have a photographer and it’s a great way to capture those first sweet moments. This tripod is only $25 and folds up super small so great for packing along.

Extra: plastic bags for dirty clothes and mints to suck on for nausea

I also packed all of our snacks in Blake’s bag because clearly I didn’t have any more room left in mine.

Thank you Baskets for our Labor & Delivery nurses | This time I put together 4 baskets to share between the L&D nurses as well as the PP nurses. These nurses are truly angels and you’ll want to thank them with something so I highly recommend showing up with some thank you treat. Just put a little thank you note on it your last name and then ask the nurses to bring them back to the nurse station once you check into your room.

nurse thank you basketWhat We’re Packing for Baby for the Hospital:

Baby Knotted Gown | I love the gowns that come with matching hats because they look so precious on them. I also prefer the knotted ones so you can fit it better to their little bodies.

Muslin blankets | We love using these blankets as swaddles and to cover the baby’s little mattress like a sheet at the hospital for photos.

Sound Machine | The sound machine isn’t just for the baby. It also helps us sleep too by drowning out some of the hospital noise.

Letter board | I packed this little 10 x 10 letter board to use for photos with all of the baby’s birth info on it. I already had his name filled out on it ahead of time so I just had to fill in the details like date, time, inches and weight. This is what we used for Beck.

Boppy Nursing Pillow & Protective Cover | This made breastfeeding so much easier because I didn’t have to hold him up, I could just prop him up on the pillow.

custom name sign

Custom Name Sign | Using a custom name sign is such a sweet way of announcing the baby’s name to everyone.

Personalized Knotted gown from Caden Lane | Caden Lane makes such beautiful swaddles, gowns and blankets, which are perfect for announcement photos.

Night Light | A nightlight is nice to keep in the bathroom instead of having to turn on the light and wake each other up.

swaddle up

Swaddle Up | This is one of our favorite swaddles that we used for Beck. I’m not sure if we’ll actually use in the hospital because the nurses are always so great about swaddling the babies in blankets, but we packed it just in case.

MAM Baby Pacifier | We packed a few different pacifiers to try with the baby because you never know what they’re going to like. Beck ended up loving the MAM pacifiers.

Side Snap Bodysuits | These side snap onesies are perfect for middle of the night changes with newborns because they having things pulled over their head and these you can just wrap around them and button.

Coastal Blue Crosby Traveler | We packed everything for the baby in this MZ Wallace bag that I already owned because it has so many pockets and compartments that it makes the perfect overnight bag for baby.

For Blake:

Blanket, personal pillow & pillow case

towel | the towels at the hospital are super tiny so it’s nice to bring one from home

Nice Shirt for photos

Pajamas

Toiletry bag with toothbrush

Snacks | You know I packed all of our favorite snacks to eat after the baby arrives like Oreo thins, Doritos, Milano Cookies and some kind bars. I also packed some orange Gatorade in hopes that the electrolytes will help my milk come in faster.

An Open Letter to Our Baby Boy

Hey everyone, I recently posted this caption on my Instagram and thought I would re-share it here along with an open letter to our baby boy.

One day when you’re old and grown, we’ll tell you about the last 30 days before you were born and how you served as a symbol of hope and love during a time of fear and chaos. We’ll tell you that above all the confusion and uncertainty there was one thing we were certain of and it was to make the world a better and safer place for you. Because you were the light shining at the end of that dark tunnel guiding us through and ready to pull us out to brighter days as a family of three. We’ll tell you that every time we seemed to lose hope, you were there reminding us to be strong because you needed us. But really it was us who needed you. And even though we dreamt it all would be different, you were perfect and that was enough.

Dear Beck, by the time that you’re old enough to read this, you’ll already know how much we love you, but we want you know how much we loved you before we even knew you. The best way to describe that to you is tell you the story of the last month leading up to your arrival. Some people will you tell you that it was a scary and chaotic time to bring a baby into the world. Others might say it was all a blur of a nightmare, but in the midst of all that, there was goodness and that goodness was you.

tulle maternity dress

Was I scared at times? Sure, but I knew had to be strong for you and put my trust in God. If I had the choice, would I have chosen to bring to you into the world when it felt calmer, absolutely! But life doesn’t always go the way you want it to. You can’t control everything not matter how hard you try, but you know what you can control? Your perspective! You can control how you see the world and how you respond to it.

beautiful maternity photos

off the shoulder dress

You want to know what I saw during the last days before your arrival? I saw the world come together and stop everything that they were doing just to keep you and loved ones safe. I saw them sacrifice their jobs, their travel plans and their social lives for the greater good. I saw doctors and nurses heroically put their lives on the line to save others. I watched families grow closer to one another and I smiled as they came up with creative ways to celebrate birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. People still celebrated and made moments feel special even when they couldn’t physically be together. Because love wasn’t canceled nor was laughter, happiness, relationships, hope or family. You see Beck, life may not always go as planned, but that doesn’t mean you should give up. You just have to look for a window or the silver lining in the situation to pull you through. Sometimes you have to look really hard, but I promise you it’s there.

As for us, it was a time when your dad and I just got to enjoy each other’s company. He  cooked me breakfast every morning to help me with my special diet that I had to follow to keep you healthy and he worked tirelessly on the house and your room to make it perfect for you. We walked every evening after dinner and talked about how excited we were for you to arrive and what you might be like and look like. We joked about me teaching you sports and what an awful idea that would be because I’m sure you know by now that I know nothing about sports. We watched Disney movies that we loved as kids and couldn’t wait to show you one day. We felt your kicks all day and night because you never stopped moving and laughed because that meant you might have my non-stop energy. Best of all, we were able to find the joy and beauty in each and every day all of because of you.  You opened our eyes to everything else the world had to offer during a time when it was hard to see those things. And for that we love you to the moon and back.

We pray that one day you’ll experience the same love with your own spouse and that God will bless you with a baby as wonderful as you.

Love, your mom and dad

A Whimsical Gender Neutral Baby Shower

Hey everyone, I recently lost track of what day it is since this crazy quarantine began, but I thought we could all use some pretty distractions today so I’m sharing all of my baby shower details. If you unfortunately had to cancel your baby shower due to the recent world crisis circumstances, my heart goes out to you and I hope you’re able to reschedule and celebrate later. Your baby shower host could even throw you a “sip’n see” party once everything settles down and it’s safe for the baby to be around friends and family. In case you aren’t familiar with sip’n see parties, it’s basically when you have the shower after the baby is born so everyone gets to see your new bundle of joy while showering you with gifts.  Speaking of gifts, be sure to check out my top baby products here—> My Top Baby Registry Picks

Scroll through this post to see m whimsical gender neutral baby shower details!

My Outfit: Sequin & Tulle Maternity Dress (wearing sz 6 —comes in a few other colors) <—For size reference: Before pregnancy I wore size smalls and still usually order smalls now, but my bust has gone from a small 32B to a full 36C so that is why I sized up to the 6 | Nude Ankle Strap Heels | Avi Hoop Earrings In Rose Gold | Name Necklace  | Amiya Cuff Bracelets

Another option is for your original host to reach out to all of the invited guests and let them know that she’s decided it’s best to throw you a virtual shower. In this case, everyone would have your presents sent directly to your home before the baby arrives so you can still get everything you need. Plus I know your friends and family still want you to feel special during this time especially with the given circumstances. If you want to take it a step further, you could even send little videos of yourself opening gifts to family members when you receive them in the mail.

If you’re waiting until this whole Covid-19 mess dissipates, be sure to check out my tips for throwing baby showers here—> Top 5 Tips for Planning and Hosting a Baby Shower

I found this rattan chair at World Market and have used used it at multiple other baby showers and parties too.

I almost feel guilty sharing all of my shower details with you at this time, but again I know you all enjoy pretty distractions from the real world so without further ado, here we go! My  mom and mother-in-law threw me a family shower, in which I could have invited my friends to, but I decided to keep friends and family separate so I would have equal time to enjoy with the both them. With that being said, I decided to throw my “friend” baby shower myself and not because my friends weren’t willing to host one for me, but because I love planning events and parties. So it was like a treat for me. I thrive on designing and planning plus I had the assistance of Paper White Collections who helped me come up with the most beautiful color scheme.

baby shower

Before we came up with the color scheme we met to brainstorm ideas and since I had already booked the venue (Maison Lafitte) in the previous year, we knew exactly what kind of vibe we wanted: the perfect combo of glam and whimsical while still staying within that gender neutral bracket.  Initially, we thought about doing a full-on rainbow theme, but then we decided to narrow it down to just a few colors and create a softer ombre look. I ended up choosing a beautiful boho invitation design from Minted with the colors: gold, blue, green and peach so we decided to use those as our base colors. The Paper White Collections team went to market with those colors in mind to find the perfect table settings and decor for the tablescape. They were also able to hand select the colors of all of the linens and ribbons that matches with my invitations.

Tablescape c/o Paper White Collections

Then I reached out to Moonbeam Fleurs and Animated Art Balloon to discuss the two big balloon and floral installations. We sent a photo of the invitation as well as color swatches to both of them so everyone would be on same page. Usually when I work with Tabitha from Animated Art Balloon, we design a fun a balloon arch together, but this time we decided to do something we’ve never done before. Ashley from White Paper Collections had a floating balloon garland installation at her shower and I loved the idea so much that we decided to recreate it with my soft ombre color scheme.

baby shower

As for the crescent floral installation, I had saved a photo of one from a wedding that I saw on Instagram and Whitney from Moonbeam Fleurs was the perfect florist to recreate it. She also arranged all of the flowers on the dining table as well the flowers that were incorporated into the balloon garland. The floral crescent installation was really important to me because I always like to have a beautiful designated spot to take photos in front of and it worked wonderfully as you can see in the pictures below.

Signs and Welcome Decor: I found all of my signs on Etsy and printed them at local printing shop. I framed them using gold frames from the dollar store and Hobby Lobby that I keep in a decor box in my garage.

Glo Event Decor installed these drapes for me at the entrance of Maison Lafitte, which also worked as a great spot for photos in the afternoon once the sun moved over.

Food: Fortunately, I didn’t have to think much about food because Maison Lafitte offers catering. I decided to go with a seated lunch menu as well as some passed appetizers, cheeseboards and bottomless mimosas.

Cake & Cookies: My cake design was supposed to look a little different as it was supposed to look like a blue agate stone, but it still tasted delicious. The cookie designs turned out absolutely beautiful. I made sure to send her a photo of the invitation so she could create cookies using the same colors and she even made a cookie looked exactly like the invitation designs.

gold block letters

I found these wooden block block letters at Hobby Lobby and spray painted them gold. I do this for every shower I host so they can be used in the baby’s room as decor.

baby shower cookies

Not only do decorative cookies make great desserts and table decor, but they’re also perfect to use as shower favors too.

Diaper Raffle, Favors & Guest Book: I’ve been working with GiGi New York for 8+ years now and we have designed three different handbags together as well as a special wedding collection when I got married. So they of course wanted to be a part of this life milestone too by providing me with a Teddy Tote to give away during my shower for the diaper raffle, leather embossed pens as the favors and personalized leather children’s book to use the guest book. I feel so fortunate that I was gifted those items because of our relationship, but I understand that may not be within everyone’s budget. So if there’s one you thing you can do, I highly recommend purchasing one of their personalized leather children’s books to use as the guest book because it’s a special keepsake that the child can keep forever with sweet notes from their friends and family.

gigi new york teddy tote

For the diaper raffle, we mentioned on the back of the invitation for guests to bring a pack of diapers any size for a chance to win a special prize. This obviously was NOT required of guests, but most of them participated knowing there was prize involved. At my family shower, we had guests bring books with hand written notes inside of them instead to bringing cards.

baby shower cookies

At the end of the shower, I put all of the decorative cookies right next to the favors by the entrance so guests wouldn’t forget to take one home.

Gifts: I decided to do an open gift concept where we put the the gifts on display using a small rolling rack for clothes and baskets with ribbon to make the diapers and baby products looks decent. I did this at my friend shower because friends our age usually don’t have any desire to sit there and watch you open presents for a whole hour. Also, I don’t know about you, but I hate opening gifts in front of people. How did we keep track who the gift came from you ask? My friend wrote down the names and items as people walked in and handed the the gifts so it was very easy to do.

Second Trimester Recap

Hey friends, I recently shared my first trimester recap post and as promised today I’m sharing my second trimester recap post. As I mentioned in my last post I was sick all the way into my second trimester, but then finally after week 20 I could at least get through the day without throwing up so that was nice. LOL The second trimester is also when you start to get your energy back and you actually have a cute bump to show off. So plenty of great things to look forward to in the second trimester. Scroll through this post to read through my second trimester experience as I answer all of the questions you submitted.

Q1.) What were some of your beauty product essentials during the second trimester and what was your skincare routine?

A1.) I started using Bio Oil all over my stomach around week 13 because I was already starting to show a little and I wanted to prevent stretch marks as much as I could. Here is the mistake I made… I didn’t use it on my hips and thighs and I should have because that’s where I ended up getting the stretch marks. So when you start using the Bio Oil, be sure to apply it all over or at least the main areas that tend to grow during pregnancy.

As for my skincare routine, I continued to use Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel because it’s super gentle on the skin. Whenever I had more intense breakouts I used Neutrogena Clear Pore Facial Cleanser / Face Mask. I even used that on my chest and back. After cleansing my face, I would moisturize with either Confidence in a Cream Hydrating Moisturizer or hydrating day & night cream. I also like using the Tula purifying face cleanser as a gently cleanser too. On top of those products, I used some Alastin skincare products recommended by my board certified dermatologist. Be sure to get all of your skincare products approved by your doctor.

As for SPF, I use Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection SPF 50 Face Shield. My dermatologist told me that it is pregnancy safe.

Q2.) When did you first feel kicks?

A2.) Everyone told me that you don’t start feeling kicks until after 16 weeks and that I would only feel flutters at first. However, I never felt “flutters” instead I immediately started feeling kicks every so often around 12/13 weeks. Only I could feel them though and they were far and few. I really started feeling intense kicks around 18 weeks. The first time Blake was ever able to feel the baby kick was around 23 weeks. I remember we came home from seeing a musical at the Saenger theater in New Orleans and the baby was kicking so hard so it was the perfect time for him to feel.

Q3.) What did you put on your registry?

A3.) I have a whole blog post on that here—> Haute Off The Rack Baby Registry Picks

Q4.) Did you have any suspicions that you might have gestational diabetes?

A4.) Yes, I really didn’t know much about gestational diabetes before I was officially diagnosed at 28 weeks, but I would have weird things happen to me. Sometimes I would suddenly feel faint and dizzy and would have to lay down and drink water and eat something to avoid passing out. Also, my heart would start beating really fast and I would feel super light-headed. I read that it was normal to feel this way during the second trimester, but it was still strange to me and although I don’t know if those symptoms actually had anything to do with gestational diabetes, but I also wasn’t surprised when I was diagnosed.

Q5.) What workouts do you recommend for second trimester?

A5.) This is a question I would ask your doctor considering that everyone’s pregnancy is different, but I doubt any doctor would be against daily walks and stretching. I went to the gym all the way through 18 weeks even when I felt sick but then the craze of holidays got the best of me and I got lazy. However, I made sure to walk about two miles almost everyday. I could probably do a better job of stretching though.

Q6.) How quickly did your body start to change in the second trimester?

A6.) I feel like I really started showing around 15/16 weeks because I’m so petite and have such a short torso. I’m only 5’1. My bra size also drastically changed during the second trimester too.

Q7.) What are some outfits that can transition from regular wear to maternity?

A7.) I share bump friendly looks on my Instagram all the time and even have a #bumpfriendly highlight right beneath my bio, but I have a blog post featuring all of those looks and will link to it here as soon as it goes live.

Power Mama Maternity Shaper | I highly recommend these maternity spanx to wear under all of your body con dresses to help smooth everything out and give your bump a nice shape.

Mamasana Live In Maternity Ankle Leggings | I own 4 pairs of these maternity leggings because I wear them so often especially when I go walking each day. They have worked since the beginning of pregnancy and are said to fit until the end. So far they still work great and I am just under 35 weeks.

Women’s Beautifully Soft Notch Collar Nightgown | Once you officially start showing, your regular pajama pants and shorts aren’t so comfy anymore. I love wearing these cotton nightgowns to bed because they super comfortable and are nice and roomy. I also don’t like anything pressing against bladder since I already have to get up so many times throughout the night to use the bathroom.

Lavender Foaming Bath | I tried to avoid warm baths and showers at all costs during the first 20 because I would get so nauseous and throw up after so I was super glad once I got the sickness under control and was able to relax in the bath again. The L’occitance  Lavender Foaming Bath is my absolute favorite bubble bath and the best way to wind down in the evening especially during the cold months.
