The Perfect Summer Babydoll Dress

Happy Friday Eve Friends! I’m so excited to launch this adorable Jennifer Babydoll Dress that I designed with Gibsonlook. It’s officially available for pre-order in white paisley and navy gingham.  To celebrate, we’re offering 15% OFF your entire purchase with code: HAUTE15. If you remember how quickly the Jennifer Shirt Dress & Smocked Puff Sleeve Dress sold out  then you know that you better order quickly because your size might sell out before you get to it especially with 4th of July weekend coming up. Speaking of the Fourth, the upcoming holiday is actually the inspiration behind the dress design. I wanted a cute navy gingham print mini dress that I could wear off the shoulder to a 4th of July party and other summer events so I partnered with Gibsonlook to create the perfect babydoll dress.

The Jennifer Babydoll Dress is fun, flirty and so chic with a smocked bust and statement puff sleeves. I designed it so that the puff sleeves can be worn on or off the shoulder and both ways look so flattering on the arms and neckline. I know this will be a go-to dress for parties, summer trips, date nights, wedding festivities and so much more. It’s especially perfect for the 4th of July weekend coming up next month.

I absolutely love the smocked midi dress that I designed and launched in April with Gibsonlook, but thought it would be a nice change to go for a mini dress length for the hottest months of the year. I made sure to choose a breathable fabric for summer that is also wrinkle resistant too so you can just roll it up in your bag and put it on the second you unpack it. When it comes to styling the dress, wear it with sandals and a hat for daytime or throw on some heels and statement earrings to dress it up. You can also pair it with sneakers for an easy casual look. My favorite way to style it is to play up the boho-chic vibes by pairing it with a wide brim hat, layered necklaces and hoop earrings.  Oh and the white is perfect for brides too!

You may recognize this dress from Beck’s first birthday party. I wore the first sample of the Jennifer Babydoll Dress for his BBQ themed birthday party and I got such great feedback from you all so I’m super excited to finally launch this dress today.

Design details:

I designed it with a cinched bust for a flattering neckline and plenty of stretch so you don’t have to deal with zippers or sucking in. I also made sure to choose a super lightweight fabric in a mini dress length to give you legs for day for summer. My favorite part is the option to wear the puff sleeves on or off the shoulder and the adjustable tie on the cinched bust.

Sizing:

Be sure to size down because Gibsonlook runs large. I am wearing the size XXS and it’s still comfortable a spacious enough to move around in. It’s also super bump friendly because their is plenty of room though the body of the dress. ***Full disclosure about the length: I’m hemmed mine 1.5 inches. Totally not necessary, but I’m only 5 ft and I like my mini dresses extra short.***

The white color is fully lined though the body so you don’t have to worry about it being see through. However, you do need to wear a nude bra or nipple covers with the white dress because the bust isn’t lined.

MY SIZING AND HEIGHT FOR REFERENCE:

Most people don’t realize how petite I am so and I understand that knowing my sizes can help you determine what size to get.
I am 5 ft and I wear a size 27 in high waisted jeans & smalls in leggings. I’m currently a 34B and take size XS/S in dresses and tops, smalls in sports bras, and XS-S in outerwear. I typically size down in Gibsonlook pieces. I’m wearing a size XXS in the Jennifer Babydoll Dress.

This is incredibly simple, cheap, AND awesomely patriotic. So here we go!

What you’ll need:

  1.  Jean shorts you wish you wore more often (or you can buy some jeans from Goodwill for $4 and cut them!)
  2. Three bottles of acrylic craft paint (I used Americana from Hobby Lobby, $.99 each. I went with more of a dark red and navy instead of primaries but that’s up to you!)
  3. Paintbrush (I used an inch wide regular art paintbrush I had lying around)
  4. Star stencil (I used a piece of cardstock, drew a star (chinese star will work!), and then cut it out with an exacto knife on a wooden cutting board, or you can just buy one from hobby lobby)
  5. (Optional) Foam letter stamps from hobby lobby ($2.99). Any stamp or stencil will work!

Procedure:

  1. I started with the stripes on the right side. I chose not to use tape because I was aiming for a semi messy look. So paint vertical lines of red, avoiding the pockets. Then paint the white stripes in between. While messy is cute, you still want to keep the width of the stripes pretty consistent.
  2. Next, I took the star stencil & placed it close to the bottom of the shorts. I then painted white inside the star starting at the center and working into the points and quickly found out this didn’t work. The paint leaked under the stencil a little bit and I had to end up going back and reshaping the blob into a star. I suggest starting at the points of the star painting inward to the center to avoid the paint getting trapped under the stencil. A light layer is best. You can always go back and add more white. I actually ended up liking the stars with less paint best.
  3. Continue painting the stars, moving the stencil along to the right. It’s ok if your stencil is on top of the previous star. It’s ok if the stars aren’t exactly lined up. Once you have a row, start working your way up the shorts placing the stencil directly between the tops of two stars of the previous row.
  4. Once you are out of room to put stars, go back and add just tips of the stars to the edges. This really makes a huge difference! Imagine the stars continuing in line and place the stencil accordingly.
  5. Now carefully paint the blue around the stars.
  6. If you have a tiny pocket, go ahead and paint that opposite of the design on the current side.
  7. Let the front dry. I used a blow dryer to speed up the process.
  8. For the back, follow the same procedure. Blow dry. Then stamp “USA” on the striped side (Optional)

UPDATE: Here is the photo of the shorts after I ran them through the wash on Cold/Delicate and laid flat to dry.

A big thank you to Heather Chauvin of Tealou & Sweetpea for guest blogging on Haute Off The Rack and sharing how to make these fun and patriotic shorts.  If you love Heather’s fun and innovative ideas, make sure to visit her at Tealou & Sweetpea.
